Job Title:  Assistant Cook - Elder Program
Salary:  $10.03 - $11.79 per hour
Reports to:  Senior Cook
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general supervision assists Senior Cook to develop menus and plan and prepare nutritious meals which meet the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans for the home delivered, congregate lunch, healthy breakfast and weekend meal programs at the Ak-Chin Elder Center. This is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: A minimum of one year of experience cooking for large groups of people is required. Experience working with Elders/Older Adults including cooking for older adults is preferred. Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications is preferred. Must be able to read and follow basic menus as well as do basic math as related to cooking and food ordering. Must possess a valid Food Handler’s Card and be CPR and First Aid certified OR be able to obtain within 90 days of hire date. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (see list on website or attached to application.) Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists in preparing and distributing monthly menus for healthy noonday meals using the Dietary Guideline for Americans as a guide.
  2. Assists in preparing special program meals such as breakfast programs and home delivered meals, including meals for individuals requiring special diets, such as for those receiving kidney dialysis treatments.
  3. Assists Senior Cook with developing/planning food orders using a computer and maintains records for all orders and menus.
  4. Assists in serving meals to elders, which includes packaging meals to homebound elders and delivering them.
  5. Assists in meal preparation to include, following recipes, washing and cutting fruit/vegetables, as well as baking and preparing beverages.
  6. Assists in preparing required reports for funding and ensures that all signature sheets for those receiving home delivered and congregate meals are in order.
  7. Assists with kitchen cleanup including operating commercial dishwasher and washing pots and pans.
  8. Helps obtain constructive feedback from consumers related to the quality of food served as well as satisfaction with menus.
  9. Ensures that all food safety guidelines provided by the Indian Health Service as well as guidelines from other funding agencies are met.
  10. Assists in inventory of all kitchen food stock, equipment, and supplies.
  11. Will assist Senior Cook in delivering and teaching nutrition education.
  12. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Dietary Guidelines for Americans as well as the special dietary needs of older adults, including those with special diet needs such as diabetes.
  • Knowledge of traditional O’odham foods preferred.
  • Knowledge of grant funding and related special requirements.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well with Elders and to convey empathy toward special needs of older adults.
  • Ability to convey hospitality to all Elders participating in Elder Center meal programs.
  • Ability to problem solve efficiently and creatively.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to operate commercial type kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Ability to create accurate reports.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member, as well as independently.
  • Ability to follow direction and receive coaching/feedback to improve effective kitchen operations during the training process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, other department employees, outside agencies and the general public.
