Job Title:  Driver
Salary:  $11.65 - $13.69 per hour
Reports to:  Transportation Supervisor - Elder Program
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position

Summary: Under general supervision, transports Elder Community members to and from appointments and related destinations. Driver work shifts vary depending on transportation needs of the Elders and may include some evenings, early mornings and weekend shifts. This is treated as a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to one-year of non-emergency driving or closely related work. Must currently possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (please see list on website or attached to the application.) Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and a Food Handler’s Card within 60 days of hire. Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check. Ideal candidate will be able to speak the O’odham language fluently.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Drives vehicle to (van/car) to pick up and deliver elderly and disabled passengers in a safe and timely manner to specified destinations within the local area, as well as the Phoenix metropolitan area.
  2. Assists elderly, infirmed, and special needs passengers into and out of vehicle with wheel chair lift if needed; ensuring proper safety methods and restraints are used throughout transportation.
  3. Delivers meals to homebound Elders and occasionally miscellaneous items.
  4. Notifies program supervisor of unusual or problem situations.
  5. Provides basic emergency medical care as needed.
  6. Schedules and performs routine vehicle maintenance and cleans interior and exterior of van.
  7. Prepares and turns in mileage logs, maintenance reports, and other vehicle records.
  8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of State and tribal traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of State driving rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the freeways and roads systems in the Phoenix metropolitan and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency medical care practices and techniques.
  • Skill in operating assigned vehicles safely.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Community members, other staff, and the public.
  • Ability to drive in heavy traffic when necessary.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull those Elderly patients that are wheelchair bound.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patients and program information.
  • Ability to speak in the O’odham language is preferred.
