Job Title:  Driver - Sanitation
Salary:  $14.99 - $17.61 per hour
Reports to:  Sanitation Director
Supervises:  Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of strenuous unskilled or semi-skilled work to remove solid waste from Community housing, buildings and grounds. This position is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to one (1) year full time general grounds maintenance or closely related work. Must successfully complete a background check. Must have the ability to work in various weather conditions with exposure to dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes and unpleasant odors. Valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements preferred.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates vehicle in accordance with Ak-Chin TOSHA, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws.
  2. Collects solid waste/refuse from residences, parks, businesses, and governmental facilities within the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  3. Manually dumps refuse/trash from customer’s containers into loading area of truck and operates compactor mechanism and discharges truck contents at assigned location.
  4. Completely dumps all receptacles and leaves the customer’s location clean and free of debris.
  5. Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents checks.
  6. Collects and hauls recycle materials from residences, parks, businesses, and governmental facilities within the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  7. Pressure washes all trucks.
  8. Cleans containers several types and sizes.
  9. Follows route assignments as directed and completes end of day documentation and check out process.
  10. Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service related issues to Sanitation Director.
  11. Works to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  12. Reports any incidents, accidents, injures, or property damage.
  13. Notifies Director of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
  14. Communicates customer requests to Director.
  15. Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by Director.
  16. Performs all duties as scheduled by Director and assists other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
  17. Performs other office duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the addresses/locations of residences, businesses, parks, and government facilities in the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the operating procedures for assigned sanitation truck.
  • Knowledge of the operation of Roll Off Truck with hoist.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining a sanitation truck.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and communicate written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
  • Ability to lift and move weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work and perform duties independently, with little or no supervision.
