Job Title:  Recreation Program Assistant
Salary:  $11.65 - $13.68 per hour
Reports to:  Parks and Recreation Supervisor
Supervises:  Not a supervisory position

Summary: Under general supervision, assists with planning and coordinating a variety of recreation/sports programs, services, and activities for the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Work involves direct and indirect contact with the public and is usually performed in accordance with specific instruction. Must be willing to work some weekends, evenings, holidays & all Department sponsored events on an as needed basis. This position is a non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to two years full time work developing, coordinating, or implementing recreation programs/activities; OR an Associate’s degree in Recreation, Leisure Activities, or closely related area may substitute for the required experience. Must possess a valid Arizona drivers license and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (see list on website or attached to job application). Must possess First Aid/CPR certification, or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire. Must complete and pass an extensive background check.

Hiring Preference: The Community affords Indian Preference and Veterans' preference. In applying Indian Preference, preference will be given to qualified Community members, then to qualified Native Americans, and then other qualified candidates. Except as otherwise stated herein, all candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, or other non-merit factor. Applicants wishing to claim Indian Preference must submit a Certificate of Indian Blood or proof of tribal enrollment at the time of application. All applicants wishing to claim Veterans' Preference must submit a copy of a certified Department of Defense DD Form 214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty."

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating a variety of recreation/sports programs, activities, and events, including, but not limited to, volleyball, basketball, and softball leagues, and a variety of other recreation/sports oriented tournaments, events, lessons, programs, and classes.
  2. Assists in the development and distribution of promotional materials to increase participation and attendance in recreation, leisure/sports programs, activities, events, and facilities. Must be able to effectively, schedule and coordinate programs.
  3. Assists in assessing the recreational needs of members in the Community and develops, evaluates, and recommends activities/programs to meet these needs.
  4. Assists in monitoring programs and activities for members, and ensures a safe/healthy atmosphere for participants. Maintains discipline among program participants.
  5. Assists in the preparation of periodic reports of program activities and status.
  6. Performs a variety of administrative support activities for the Recreation Program Coordinator.
  7. Transports participants and acts as chaperone during recreation/sports programs, field trips, special events, and other related functions.
  8. Works closely with various individuals, groups, agencies, departments, and Community organizations by assisting in coordinating and organizing special and annual Community events and celebrations.
  9. Assists with the enrollment and registration in the various recreation/sports programs as required.
  10. Coaches teams and officiates games as needed.
  11. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of general Adult/Youth Recreation programs, services, and activities.
  • Knowledge of general Parks and Recreation Department operating policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general sports/recreation program development principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of general clerical/office support practices and procedures.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and coordinating a variety of recreation/sports programs, activities, and events.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships/schedules with volunteers, other staff, and the public.
  • Skill in performing a variety of clerical/office support work, including typing, filing, photocopying, and inputting data into computerized data bases.
  • Ability to chaperone program participants in a safe and structured fashion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with staff, other employees and general public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow routine and written instructions.
  • Ability to coach and officiate games.
